The purpose of this qualification is to provide a pre-employment qualification for people who are entering the hospitality industry in a range of basic positions.

To provide a credential for those  interested in entering the hospitality industry, that will support their future employment  opportunities to work across the different hospitality career pathways.

Entry Requirements

English Language Requirements 

  • Students must be 18 years of age or over. 
  • Applicants need to comply with Ministry of Health requirements 
  • All applicants will be interviewed to consider the application for the enrolment. Acceptance will be determined at the discretion of the interviewer. 
  • There may be further restrictions when this course is offered under a Tertiary Education Commission Contract. 

English Language Requirements 

  • In line with NZQA requirements for international students, where English is not the applicant's first  language, they will be required to provide evidence of their English language skills  Evidence that the student has: 
  • Must have an IELTS level 5.5 (General or Academic) with no sub-score less than 5, or
  • Completion of the relevant New Zealand Certificate in English Language, or Completion of accepted international equivalents.

Education Pathway

This qualification can lead on to the New Zealand Certificate in Food and Beverage Service  (Level 3) with strands in Barista, Bar Services, Buffet Services, Cafe Services, Functions  Services, Quick Service Restaurant Services, and Restaurant Services [Ref: 2104].

Employment Pathway

Graduates can be employed or self-employed in roles such as kitchen hand, waiter, barista,  catering assistant, receptionist, barbacks or glassy
